You Should Feel Comfortable Asking Anything About Your Books.

Working With Island Bookkeeping
The Questions I Would Want Answered If I Were Hiring a Bookkeeper.
What does Island Bookkeeping do?
Island Bookkeeping provides ongoing QuickBooks Online bookkeeping for small businesses. Depending on what your business needs, that can include transaction categorization, bank and credit-card reconciliations, monthly financial reports, QuickBooks organization, catch-up and cleanup work, and ongoing bookkeeping support.
Do you only work with businesses in Maryland?
No. Island Bookkeeping is based on Maryland's Eastern Shore, but QuickBooks Online allows me to work remotely with businesses throughout the United States. Maryland is my home market, and North Carolina is a primary growth market because I have a genuine family connection to the state and spend time there regularly.
Can you work with my North Carolina business even though you're based in Maryland?
Yes. Most bookkeeping work can be handled remotely through QuickBooks Online, phone, email, and secure digital tools. The technology may be remote, but I don't want the relationship to feel remote. I still want to know you, understand your company, and be someone you feel comfortable calling.
What accounting software do you use?
Island Bookkeeping focuses on QuickBooks Online. Specializing in one primary bookkeeping platform helps me build a consistent process while adapting the bookkeeping to the needs of each business.
How often will you look at my books?
I believe bookkeeping works best when it receives regular attention throughout the month. Rather than ignoring the books until month-end, I prefer a weekly rhythm for reviewing activity and keeping things moving. The exact workflow can vary depending on the business.
What financial reports will I receive?
Ongoing clients can receive regular financial reports such as a Profit & Loss statement and Balance Sheet. My goal is not simply to send reports. I want you to understand what you are looking at and feel comfortable asking questions.
Can you help if my bookkeeping is behind?
Yes. If your QuickBooks file is behind, inconsistent, or needs cleanup, we can review what is going on and determine the work needed to create a cleaner starting point. You do not need to get everything perfect before contacting me.
How much does bookkeeping cost?
Ongoing bookkeeping for smaller, straightforward businesses can start around $300 per month. Because every business is different, your final price depends on the amount and complexity of the bookkeeping involved. I'll learn about your business and review enough information to understand the work before giving you a final quote.
What do you need before giving me a quote?
We start with a conversation. For a final quote, I may ask to review recent financial activity, such as several months of bank or credit-card statements, or receive accountant access to your QuickBooks Online file. I will explain exactly what I need and why.
Do I need to sign a long-term contract?
The exact engagement terms will be explained before we begin. More important to me is building a relationship where you continue working with Island Bookkeeping because the service is valuable, communication is good, and you trust the work being done.
Will I work directly with Brandon?
Yes. The personal relationship is a major part of Island Bookkeeping. As the company grows, there may eventually be team members helping behind the scenes, but the standard will remain: clients should feel known, cared for, and able to communicate with someone who understands their business.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
Island Bookkeeping is especially interested in owner-led and service-based businesses, including contractors, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, landscaping, cleaning, property services, marine businesses, automotive businesses, recycling and industrial service companies, and many other small businesses.
Do I need to understand bookkeeping or QuickBooks before we work together?
Absolutely not. You built your business because you are good at what you do. You should not have to become a bookkeeper too. Part of my job is explaining things simply and helping you understand the information that matters.
What if I have questions during the month?
Ask them. I want clients to feel comfortable reaching out when something does not make sense. Good bookkeeping is also about having someone you trust to talk through questions with you.
How do we get started?
Start with a conversation. Tell me about your business, what you are doing now for bookkeeping, what is frustrating you, and what you would like to improve. From there, I will explain what I recommend and what the next step would be.
A Simple Philosophy
If You're Confused About Something, I Haven't Explained It Well Enough Yet.
Financial information should help you run your business. It shouldn't make you feel like you're reading another language.
My job is not to impress you with accounting terminology. My job is to help make the bookkeeping side of your business easier to understand.
Maryland + North Carolina
Local Connection. Remote Capability.
Island Bookkeeping is rooted on Maryland's Eastern Shore and is intentionally building strong relationships with businesses in Maryland and North Carolina.
That doesn't prevent us from serving a good-fit client elsewhere in the country. It simply gives our growth strategy a clear focus while QuickBooks Online makes geography much less important.
